HRC's Holiday Shopping Guide, based on its Corporate Equality Index, embodies everything that's wrong with HRC. And yet some of its comparisons are useful. For instance, I routinely buy gasoline, and lots of people go to Target for things like paper towels and toilet paper.
It's funny - I remember my parents boycotting Mobil in the '80s to protest apartheid in South Africa; then people not wanting to buy Exxon in the '90s because of their response to the Valdez spill. Then, according to a site linked from HRC's shopping guide, the 1999 merger between the two resulted in gay and lesbian Mobil employees who had previously enjoyed antidiscrimination protections and partner benefits losing those benefits.
I need to read Dana Frank's book on gender and consumerism for my orals. Sigh.
