Tomorrow is the planned beginning of a fare strike to protest massive cuts to Chicago's public transit system, the nation's second largest, which are set to go into effect January 2. In covering the fare strike, though, the Tribune elected to cover not the strike itself, but an email hoax that the CTA decided to refer to the FBI for investigation. Even the Tribune, though, can't quite pull off the job of turning someone's fake press release into - well - a federal case. The FBI spokesman said, "we are not sure if there was a violation of federal law. We will be consulting with the U.S. attorney's office to determine if a possible Internet crime occurred." What's fascinating, though, is that Red Eye , the Tribune's daily tabloid-style paper aimed at and popular among the 20something set, featured an lengthy column about whether or not a fare strike is a justifiable tactic, a question that has also been the subject of much debate on my 20something leftist/hipster/queer listservs (so, commenters, check out the specifics if you want to weigh in).
