Bush comes out in favor of sodomy

(1) President Bush strongly supported sodomy laws as governor of Texas, but he appears to have done an about-face when faced with the even more heinous possibility of same-sex marriage: "What they do in the privacy of their house, consenting adults should be able to do. . . . This is America. It's a free society. But it doesn't mean we have to redefine traditional marriage." See stories at NYT and AmericaBlog.

(2) Now that the Senate Democrats, perhaps sensing their political position may be stronger than expected, have agreed to a vote on the FMA this week, the Republicans now want to vote on TWO different Constitutional amendments. This is literally making a mockery of the Constitution.

Democratic Senate whip Harry Reid (NV): "We are ready to rock and roll on the debate on this issue."

HRC president Cheryl Jacques: "I think it is outrageous and frankly surreal that at the 11th hour in this debate, they are literally rewriting the Constitution on the back of a napkin."

(3) This is a good time to recall the words of Chief Justice Earl Warren, in Loving v. Virginia (1967): "The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men."
